Simple Dutch Oven Beef Stew-Good Hearty Camp Food

by on 10/12/2014

Simple cooking is what we like best on our family camping vacations and this camping recipe is just that; simple and delicious. It doesn’t take much time to put together and prep time can be cut down even more if you use canned potatoes.

1 to 2 pounds of stew meat

6 potatoes cut up into chunks or 2 cans of canned potatoes

1 cup of baby carrots

1 cup celery in 1 inch pieces

1 small to medium onion chopped up

1 package McCormicks beef stew mix

1 package McCormicks beef and herb gravy mix

salt and pepper, to taste

Get your campfire down to a manageable level with plenty of hot coals. Put your stew meat in the Dutch oven with just enough water to cover it. Place the lid on the Dutch oven and cook the stew meat until it is tender. Don’t forget to soap your Dutch oven before you begin cooking!

Once the meat is tender, add in your potatoes, the baby carrots and the onion. Cook these until they are tender. Finally add in the stew and gravy mixes. Add more water if you want to. Cover the oven with the lid and let the whole thing simmer for about ten more minutes. After ten minutes or so, remove your Dutch oven from the coals. put a little of the salt and pepper into the stew and enjoy!
